Our September outreach was another peaceful event for the books. One of our newest volunteers, Tania, celebrated her birthday by asking all of her relatives and friends to donate money so she could create care packages for our less fortunate friends. That was very thoughtful of her and helped to make this day a success.
One of our donors, DHL, celebrated National Volunteer Day by having their employees make hygiene packages for our outreach. The packages consisted of wipes, deodorant, lotion, body wash, socks, snacks, and many more items, all filled with a lot of love.
For the food this month, we would like to thank El Palacio de los Jugos on Sunset Drive. Our less fortunate friends enjoyed imperial rice, sweet plantains, and salad. We received so many compliments on how much they loved it. We also received clothing and shoe donations and would like to thank everyone who contributed these necessary items.
This particular Saturday, some of our friends in need voiced the challenges they are now facing, explaining that vouchers for housing were distributed but that not everyone had received one. With the new law going into effect on 10/1/24, HB 1365 prohibits homeless individuals from sleeping in public places with the consequence of being jailed. These individuals also mentioned that a similar plan was attempted in 2004, but it did not go through as planned because the jails were too full and the initiative was therefore halted.
As a group, Heaven Sent is trying to obtain a feeding permit from the City for the month of November, which is a challenge for us and other organizations. We have been praying for the City to reconsider this and to develop a better plan than simply incarcerating individuals for being homeless. Heaven Sent would request that our members and supporters come together and stay in prayer about the new law and what the future holds for our less fortunate friends and the future of Heaven Sent.
And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.
